One of the front doors of the Vernon Hills Police Station is broken out after a police officer shot Howard Lazarus, inset, when he pulled a gun

A police officer shot and wounded an armed man inside the Vernon Hills Police Department headquarters shortly after midnight, police said.
According to authorities, a man entered the lobby of the station at 740 Lakeview Parkway, claiming he had been involved in an accident and wanted to file a report. When the officer entered the lobby to meet with him, the man drew a handgun and pointed it at the officer, according to reports.
The officer drew his service weapon and fired at the subject, striking him at least one time, police said. The subject was taken to the hospital where he is in fair condition with non-life threatening injuries.
