Wednesday, 3 April 2013

Police are investigating the death of a homeless man who was found in flames near his make-shift shelter in Oak Lawn Tuesday evening, officials said.

The man was found after police received a call at 9:31 p.m. that a person was on fire at 99th Place and Southwest Highway in the South Suburb, according to Oak Lawn Police.

Officials identified the man as James Brewer, 49, but no home address was found, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy conducted today was inconclusive and officials said a cause of death was pending investigation and toxicology exams, according the the office.

The man was sleeping in a small shelter next to garbage dumpsters next
to an unoccupied business at 9926 Southwest Highway, police said. His shelter was
surrounded by a brick wall and corrugated sheet metal which officials believe may have prevented the flames from spreading.
