Mother, 2-year-old son shot during West Englewood drive-by - a few days ago a mother and 5 year old son were shot & murdered
A mother and her two-year-old son were wounded during a drive-by shooting in the West Englewood neighborhood Sunday night.
The 26-year-old woman and the boy were sitting in a parked van in the 1700 block of West 73rd when they were struck by bullets fired from a dark-colored van that drove by them about 6 p.m., police said.
The woman was shot in the right wrist. The 2-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. Both were listed in “stable” condition, police said Monday morning.
The two were initially taken to Holy Cross Hospital, but later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Area South detectives are investigating, though police have not determined a motive for the shooting.
Gun stolen from home of Will County sheriff's officer used in crime spree by career criminal Zeeshan Rashid, 19, of Joliet
A young colored boy accused of shooting two people during a five-day crime spree told police he used a gun stolen from the home of a Will County sheriff's corrections officer in the crimes, a source from the sheriff's office said.Zeeshan Rashid, 19, of Joliet, is being held in lieu of $2 million bond. He has been charged with aggravated battery related to a June 13 shooting near Joliet and attempted armed robbery related to crimes June 15 and 17. He also faces residential burglary and stolen motor vehicle charges related to the break-in at the corrections officer's home.
Rashid and two other men broke into the corrections officer's home while the officer was on vacation, sheriff's spokesman Ken Kaupas said. The three allegedly took the officer's department-issued handgun, a .40-caliber Glock; ammunition; magazines; the officer's body armor; and some of his uniform shirts. Investigators recovered the body armor and shirts, Kaupas said.

'Heroes': 19 elite firefighters killed battling Arizona blaze
Nineteen firefighters - all members of an elite response team - were killed Sunday battling a fast-moving wildfire in Arizona, marking the deadliest single incident for firefighters since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, officials said.
In a statement, President Barack Obama said the "thoughts and prayers" of all Americans would be with the loved ones of the firefighters killed near the town of Yarnell, Ariz., about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix. He described the fallen men as "heroes."
The fire, which investigators believe was sparked by lightning, also destroyed more than 200 buildings in the town, which is home to about 700 people.
Mary Rasmussen, a spokeswoman for the Prescott National Forest, said all 19 killed were members of the 20-strong Granite Mountain Hotshots, a Prescott, Ariz.-based crew who battled blazes in New Mexico and Arizona in recent weeks.

Police say Chanelle Luckett showed up at her ex-boyfriend’s far South Side home at 4:40 a.m. after he didn’t answer any of her 30 phone calls.
Luckett, 27, banged on the home’s windows and doors, yelling obscenities all the while, police said. The 33-year-old man finally came outside and told her to leave. He also said he had another woman inside, police added.

James Craig's first day as Detroit police chief is Monday, residents hope for change... like an all white city???
On the eve of James Craig’s first day as police chief, many in the city hope the transition brings a wave of change.
Certainly, what residents hope Chief Craig can bring is a faster responding department.
The only eyes watching Oscar Hair Salon overnight are surveillance cameras and they got a good look at one criminal breaking in, stealing a television, shaving gels, and cash.
The problem is the barber shop owner wanted Detroit Police to take a good look, too--but they never came.
“I’m not from here, and I’m not familiar with the rules,” says the barber shop owner.
Fearing retribution, he doesn’t want to be identified, but says it’s the second time in three days his shop has been broken into. And he’s still waiting for Detroit police to show up.
“I wait like three hours, nobody shows up, so I had to leave because it was late. Then I came in the morning, and I call the police, they said ‘we don’t have enough people to send to you.’”
The barber shop owner says with a new police chief on the horizon, it’s time now to change the way Detroit’s bad guys think about crime.
“They already know what’s up and what they’re gonna get. That’s why they keep doing it. So that means they don’t really care about police. They don’t care about the government. They know what’s up.”
Chief Craig has said his first priority is lowering Detroit’s crime rate -- and he says that does not happen without raising the morale of his officers.

Program that blames whitie might reduce minorities in juvenile detention

To reduce the unconscious biases that contribute to racial disparities in juvenile justice,
Implicit Bias Training has been proposed in Indiana.
VALPARAISO | The city's Advisory Human Relations Council is exploring how to help reduce racial bias within the juvenile justice system.
Tony McDonald, a Porter County juvenile probation officer and coordinator of the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative, spoke to City Council members at their regular monthly meeting Tuesday at City Hall.
McDonald said Porter County is among eight counties in the state participating in the JDAI, which seeks to improve the juvenile justice system, including decreasing the number of youths in detention centers without compromising public safety.
“Detention centers should house the worst of the worst,” McDonald said. “They're not for kids who've just made a mistake.”
One of the goals of the initiative is to reduce the disproportionate number of minority youths who come into contact with the justice system and who serve time at detention centers, he said.
While many people associate racism with overt types of discrimination such as racial epithets, hate crimes and cross burnings, acts of modern racism can occur in ways that often leave no apparent evidence, according to JDAI. (?)
JDAI studies show whites are more likely to support life-without-parole sentences in cases when black youths are involved and likelier to consider black youths as similar to adults in criminal culpability.
To reduce the unconscious biases that contribute to racial disparities in juvenile justice, Implicit Bias Training has been proposed in Indiana, McDonald said.
Pending funding, the training could start in September, and would be available to people in juvenile services, law enforcement, government, business, education, mental health fields and the faith-based community.
McDonald said since the JDAI began in Porter County three years ago, there have been positive outcomes and a decrease in the number of youths at the detention center.
Today, juveniles who are arrested are not just automatically sent to the center, but are objectively assessed to determine their degree of risk. The JDAI also seeks to speed up the time between arrest and case disposition, and to improve the conditions of confinement, McDonald said.
Other Indiana counties participating in the JDAI include Marion, Clark, Johnson, Elkhart, Howard, Tippecanoe and Lake.
