The Smiley face murder theory (variations include Smiley face murders, Smiley face killings, Smiley face gang, and others) is a theory advanced by two retired New York City detectives, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, that a number of men found dead in bodies of water across several states over the last decade did not accidentally drown, as concluded by law enforcement agencies, but were victims of a serial killer or killers.
The body of a northwest suburban man who went missing last month while sightseeing in Washington, D.C. was found floating in the Tidal Basin early Thursday, police said today. The body of Sarath Kumar Potharaju, 35, of Grayslake, was pulled from the water after people in the area discovered it floating near the FDR Memorial, said police spokesman Araz Alali.
Potharaju was first reported missing by a relative on the afternoon of March 31.
Potharaju’s body is the second to be found recently in the waters in southwest Washington, D.C., Alali said, but police do not believe the deaths are connected.
