Dolton is broke, Mayor Riley Rogers said this week as he urged the Village Board to approve borrowing $1.2 million to keep the village solvent for a few months.
Rogers, who took office three weeks ago, said other village accounts had just $125,000 in them, while the village had more than $500,000 in payroll and insurance payments due Friday.
"The reality is that as of today, all of our bank accounts are empty," Rogers said.
