BROTHERS IN ARMS: NYPD cop, two siblings nabbed for scheming to illegally sell 'some of the world's most powerful firearms' in the Philippines

Friday, 6 September 2013

Officer Rex-Gene Maralit; his brother Wilfredo Maralit, a Customs and Borders Protection officer; and their brother Ariel Maralit are charged with conspiracy to violate the Arms Export Control Act and with conspiracy to engage in unlicensed firearm dealing.

They were brothers in arms.
A New York City cop and his two siblings are charged with illegally conspiring to sell military-grade weapons to potential buyers in the Philippines, federal authorities and police sources said.
Officer Rex-Gene Maralit, 44, who was stationed at police headquarters in Manhattan, Wilfredo Maralit, 48, a Customs and Borders Protection officer at Los Angeles International Airport, and their brother Ariel Maralit, 43, schemed to sell assault rifles, pistols, and firearm accessories to potential buyers in the Philippines without government approval from January 2009 to March 2013, the Justice Department said.
Ariel Maralit, the youngest brother, was in the Philippines from January 2009 to March 2013 and identified potential buyers, the feds said. His siblings then purchased the requested high-powered weapons from American dealers, sometimes using their police credentials to get discounts, cops said. They then disassembled the weapons and smuggled them out of the country, Department of Justice sources said.
The brothers did not attain government permits to sell the weapons overseas. All three were charged with conspiracy to violate the Arms Export Control Act, which was minted in 1976 to control the international sale of weapons and prohibits American dealers from selling to international buyers without permission and documentation from the State Department.
