Everyday hero: New Mexico State Police Officer Steven Nunez is being hailed as a hero for helping save the life of an injured 8-year-old girl

Saturday, 18 May 2013

A New Mexico state trooper is being hailed as a hero for helping save the life of an 8-year-old girl who became trapped inside an overturned car last week.
Last Wednesday, officer Steven Nunez arrived at the site of a rollover on Interstate 40 east of Grants, only to discover a child seriously hurt and pinned under a large SUV.
The upside-down vehicle was crushing three quarters of the girl's body, so Nunez jumped into action and attempted to lift the SUV off her with the help of a jack, but without success.
Nunez then called over four bystanders, and together the five of them were able to raise the SUV enough to free the 8-year-old out, ABC News Radio reported.
The injured child was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital, where she is listed in serious but stable condition.
On Thursday, officer Nunez spoke out about last week's rescue operation, which was recorded on his dashboard camera.
It all started at 7.40am on May 8 when Nunez pulled up to a black Ford SUV resting upside-down near milepost 92 on Interstate 40.
The 8-year-old girl was unconscious and lying face down under the wrecked vehicle.
