The Cook County sheriff’s office has received 150 tips online since it started operating its anonymous online crime tip site, Sheriff Tom Dart said Tuesday, encouraging others to come forward with information that can help law enforcement officials.

While not a substitute of 911, the site chips away at the code of silence, Dart said at a news conference at the Cook County Jail complex.

“It allows people to feel even more anonymous,” he said.

Flanked by Maywood Mayor Edwenna Perkins and Police Cmdr. Elijah Willis, Dart pointed specifically to how the site help lead to the arrest one of three men eventually charged in the murder of 19-year-old Dashamone D. McCarthy in the west suburb last May.

“It was a tip that gave us that extra edge,” Willis said.
