The grandmother of a West Side 8-year-old who was found strangled and beaten in her Austin neighborhood home on Friday is accused of the child's murder, police said.
Helen M. Ford, 51, of the 5200 block of West Adams Street, was charged about 2 a.m. this morning with one count of first degree murder, police said.
Ford initially told police Gizzell Ford, her 8-year-old granddaughter, harmed herself because she was upset her mother was not visiting her, but further investigation revealed that Helen Ford had struck the child about the head and body numerous times and strangled her, according to police.
