Slain cop's son among those wounded in outbreak of violence
Among the more than dozen people wounded in this week's outbreak of violence was the son and namesake of a Chicago police officer slain outside his home nearly three years ago.
“He’s doing OK,” said Pamela Bailey, widow of Officer Michael Bailey Sr. and the mother of Michael Bailey Jr., 30. “It was senseless. I’m very angry. He’s sitting there in pain … trying to figure out why.”
Bailey was wounded during a 12-hour period that saw three people killed and at least 18 people wounded as the city saw its warmest weather of the year. Most of the shootings occurred in neighborhoods long targeted by police.
He was shot in the 1000 block of West Garfield Boulevard in the Englewood neighborhood around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday as he sat in his car with someone else. Bailey was talking to some women when at least one gunman approached and fired several shots at the car, striking Bailey, police said.
Bailey was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a wound to his abdomen, his mother said.
“He’s still trying to figure out why those guys shot (him),” Pamela Bailey said. “I also feel for my family, especially my son. He’s been through a lot.”
Bailey said her son is not in a gang and was getting ready to go to barber school. He was “trying to get his life together,” his mother said.
Cook County court records show Michael Bailey Jr.’s has been arrested several times. His record includes a felony weapons conviction, a misdemeanor weapons conviction and at least one misdemeanor marijuana possession conviction.
His father was fatally shot while off-duty and outside his home in July 2010. Bailey Jr.'s sister, Jada Bailey, also is a police officer.
Bailey Sr., 62, had just returned home from an overnight shift guarding then-Mayor Richard Daley's residence when he was shot and killed while cleaning his new Buick outside his Park Manor neighborhood home. He was still in his uniform when a man approached and tried to steal his Buick or rob him, police have said.

He was the third Chicago police officer killed in two months.
His son was caught in a wave of bloodshed as Chicago closed out April with the lowest number of homicides in more than 50 years.
Department statistics showed homicides in April fell sharply from a year earlier to 24, the lowest level since 1962, yet the spate of shootings Tuesday night drew the attention of the news media.
The homicide total for the first four months of 2013 was just as encouraging as April’s total. The city recorded fewer than 100 homicides through April for the first time since 1963, the department said.
