A 25-year-old pregnant woman lost her baby after a group of people beat her Monday night on a South Side sidewalk in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The woman was walking in the 4800 block of South Laflin about 11 p.m. Monday when a group of men and women approached her and exchanged words, Chicago Police said.
People in the group punched the woman and knocked her to the ground, then continued to beat her, landing blows to her arms and stomach, police said.
The woman was at least 7 1/2 months pregnant, a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.
She was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital, where the baby girl was stillborn Tuesday afternoon, the medical examiner’s office said.
The woman’s address is listed in the 4700 block of South Paulina, the medical examiner’s office said — about four blocks away from where she was attacked.
An autopsy Wednesday determined the baby died in the womb as a result of the attack, the medical examiner’s office said.
No one was in custody Wednesday night for the beating, which might have been gang-related, police said.
