Marinette County Wisconsin gunfire leaves 2 black men dead, including 1 by sheriff deputies

Tuesday, 2 July 2013

Two black men with very checkered pasts are dead, including one shot and killed by deputies, after Marinette County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of an intruder in a cabin.

Deputies were checking on the report of an armed intruder about 10 p.m. Monday at a cabin off N. 5th Road in the Town of Pound. Then police received a call that a car had crashed into a house in the same area, according to a sheriff's news release issued Tuesday.

Deputies found the car with a man shot inside. The man, in his late 20s, was taken to Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette and then transferred to a Green Bay hospital where he died.

The investigation into the first shooting led deputies to another man inside a vehicle with a shotgun and a handgun. The man, believed to be in his late 70s, refused orders to surrender. The man's vehicle was blocked by police cruisers, including an armored vehicle from the Brown County Sheriff's Office.

When the man pointed the gun at them, deputies shot and killed the man. The names of the two men killed have not been released. No officers were injured.

The investigation is ongoing. The state Department of Justice and state Crime Lab are among the agencies assisting.
