A Chicago man held an elevator door shut as his friend robbed a man with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair at Chicago Union Station last week, officials said.
Demetrius Thomas, 48, of the 1400 block of S. Canal St., held the elevator door as another man, who was not identified in Cook County bond court Saturday, took a cellphone out of the purse wrapped around the waist of the man in the wheelchair, according to court documents.
Thomas told Amtrak police about his involvement after he was recognized by an officer in surveillance video taken of the incident, which occurred Aug. 21 at Chicago Union Station, 225 S. Canal St.. Thomas told police he knew the man was being robbed and he “felt bad for the poor guy in the wheelchair,” according to an arrest report.
Thomas was charged with robbery of a handicapped victim, a Class 1 felony, according to court documents. Judge Laura Sullivan ordered him held in lieu of $300,000 bond on Saturday.
His next court date is Aug. 29.
