Chicago Firefighters and fire trucks will be positioned on the Chicago Public Schools "Safe Passage Ways" to help quell the black violence in Chicago

District Deputy Chiefs:  Make sure you provide your Battalion Chiefs with the information that came out yesterday with the pay checks. The laminated copies of the schools and routes are for the companies. This program will last a minimum of three weeks thus the reason for lamination of the maps.

Visibility is the key to this program. The Battalion Chiefs must ensure we are complying with the directions of the operations. The companies must position themselves exactly where they have been designated to report.

There will be many eyes on us and I do not need to remind anyone that you will never know who is watching or from where. We as a department must shine with regards to our efforts.
We control our actions under the direction of the chief officers!

I will be attending a final meeting this morning at 0900 and once completed I will set up a conference call to the exempt members.

When you provide your BC’s the information please note any questions so I may answer them during the call.

The ADCP’s and the PFC’s will also have duties. Currently the only units to remain in the fire houses will be the ambulances which means one of the medics must be near the front, on watch in the event someone is looking to take refuge at the firehouse (safehouse).

The PFC’s will be provided Safe Passage route maps and will be responsible to drive the routes along with the BC’s.

The DDC’s and ADCP’s will also drive the routes.

You will not be alone as there will be multiple layers of city agencies doing the same. The times of operations is actually 0630 to 1830 each day. The exempt rank and administrative group will pick up times when the others are off the routes. (On the way into work and returning from work). Every member including the commissioner levels will be taking part.

This like many other special events we work is just another day at the office. Let’s take a positive approach to this operation as it is all about the kids and their comfort zone.

John McNicholas
Deputy Fire Commissioner
Bureau of Operations
