Elgin making arrests in year-long drug investigation involving Illegal Benaers

Saturday 1 June 2013

Elgin authorities today announced arrests are underway following a year-long investigation of heroin and other drug sales.

The investigation targeted sales throughout the Elgin area, including a heroin supply and distribution chain in an east side neighborhood that provided drugs to customers from Cook, Kane, McHenry, Lake and DuPage counties, according to an Elgin police news release.

About 80 people ultimately will face charges due to the investigation, which required help from various local law enforcement agencies along with the FBI, ICE, Kane County sheriff's office and Kane County state's attorney's office, Elgin police said.

While some suspects already were in custody, police Thursday arrested 22 people and said the sweep will continue over the until all the targets are in custody. As of Friday afternoon, 52 people have been arrested.

Most of those in custody face various felony charges involving possession or distribution of a controlled substance or cannabis, while some also face weapons charges, police said.

"We are confident that this sweep will disrupt the distribution of heroin in the Elgin area and ideally reduce the negative impacts of drug-related crime on our community," Elgin Police Drug Sergeant Chris Jensen said in the release.

Jensen encouraged anyone struggling with drug addiction to seek help from local resources or call Elgin police.
