Christyn May said her heart was broken after hearing that 2013 Duluth East graduate Megan Bailey was killed in a single-car accident north of Two Harbors this weekend.
May was Bailey’s club volleyball coach and had spent time with Bailey this spring convincing her to keep playing volleyball into college. The result was a scholarship to Iowa Lakes Community College this fall.
“She had a knack to carry her game to the next level,” said May, who coaches the Minnesota North 18s team affiliated with USA Volleyball. May is also an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
“I loved her personality,” May said. “She was a quiet person off the court but a ferocious competitor on it. She was a wild mustang.”
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that Bailey’s vehicle was traveling south on the Drummond Grade near Stewart Lake when it left the roadway along a steep embankment and hit several trees. Bailey, the only occupant of the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected.
Her car was seen by a passerby at 7:47 a.m. Saturday.
Shawn Roed, the activities director at East, said in a prepared statement that Bailey was a competitor who excelled in volleyball for the Greyhounds.
“Megan demonstrated perseverance and dedication on and off the court and never gave up on her goal of playing for the Greyhounds,” Roed wrote. “The East staff and administration send … thoughts and prayers to her teammates, friends and family. The Greyhounds will open the 2013 season with Megan in their hearts.”
Bailey was the daughter of Kim Bailey of Duluth.
“She was a joy to coach,” May said. “She enjoyed playing. She just had a great soul. I feel robbed. She was an amazing person.”
In a Facebook post from earlier this month, Bailey, 18, was apparently starting to think about the ramifications of leaving home for college.
“The last two days really made me think a lot about how much I’m really gonna miss this place and everyone,” she wrote. “I thought it would be easy but I guess I was wrong.”
