The children ranged in age from 4 to 14. Some of them were not wearing seatbelts, authorities said.
The most seriously injured included a 5-year-old boy in serious-to-critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and a 20-year-old woman in the same condition at the hospital, Chicago Fire Chief Juan Hernandez said.
Four other people were taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center, three to Roseland Hospital and two to Metro South Medical Center, all in good or fair condition.
The crash happened near 99th Street, south of where the Dan Ryan Expressway splits, at about 12:15 a.m.
The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban, a 30-year-old woman, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and child endangerment, according to police. Her name was not released.
