The Bar Louie "NO THUG" Dress Code insulting blacks who want to dress like a thug or like Trayvon Martin

Monday, 5 August 2013

Memphis restaurant's dress code is causing a stir in the community.

The Bar Louie late night dress code required "all hats face forward, no excessively baggy clothing, no large chains worn outside, no sleeveless shirts for men, no large white t-shirts, no sweat pants, and no sunglasses".

Memphian Garrett McQueen found the dress policy offensive and posted a review on YELP. The review caught the attention of the manager at Bar Louie ... resulting in a discussion, one McQueen hopes goes beyond the Overton Square business owners.

"If restaurant or clubs or bars want specific dress codes..do that in a way that doesn't exclude people or put out negative ideas about what I would consider black cultural clothing," explained McQueen.

The general manager of Bar Louie said the dress code sign was taken down, but they will continue to enforce a dress code and intend to put a revised dress code sign back up.

The manager says their intent was never to offend anyone, only to protect the brand and neighborhood. The new dress code will not be the same but will be similar to those of other Overton Square businesses.

As for McQueen, he stated he "never intended bad press on the restaurant (and was) only hoping for a discussion".

McQueen did give the bar three stars out of five.
