When the new mayor of Hazel Crest took office this spring, he discovered that the village manager and two top employees had received double-digit pay hikes that he thought violated town rules.
But instead of trying to get the attention of federal or state law enforcement agencies, Mayor Vernard Alsberry Jr. turned to investigators with the Cook County sheriff's office.
Talks are underway that could make Sheriff Tom Dart's office the town's official inspector general.
