An elderly Tinley Park woman died in a fatal fire Friday morning at a condo-complex on the 6200 block of Pine Trail Lane in Tinley Park, officials confirmed.
The fire started inside the woman's second-floor bedroom, according to Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Slepski. Its cause remains under investigation, according to a Tinley Park Fire Department news release.
At last check, village officials did not know the woman's name, according to village spokesman Jason Freeman, but did describe her as "elderly." Another woman in the next door condo unit was successfully evacuated from the second floor, officials said, but she sustained no injuries.
A representative from the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal was sent to the scene to assist in the investigation, officials said.
A neighbor who lived downstairs from the woman told the Tribune he called 911 after a landscaper rang the doorbell because he saw smoke filtering through the upstairs window.
The landscaper, Luis Calderon with Nogas Landscaping, said he was passing by and saw the smoke this morning. He informed a different homeowner, who he said rang the doorbell. The woman who lived upstairs didn't answer, he said.
Both Calderon and the downstairs neighbor said they saw the woman being carried out.
The downstairs neighbor, who declined to give his name, said a volunteer firefighter came by and kicked down the door, then went inside to help the woman.
Village officials said this afternoon that the woman died at the scene.
