A Batavia man was fatally shot by Kane County Sheriff's Deputies after the man pointed a rifle at the officers this morning, officials said.

Police were called to the man's home after the 52-year-old man from unincorporated Batavia Township was making suicidal threats at about 11:40 a.m., Kane County Sheriff's police said. The man was declared dead at 7:30 p.m. at Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, police said in a news release.

The officers were told that the man may have fired a gun, police said.

When they arrived the deputies tried to get the man to drop the weapon but after refusing he pointed the weapon at the officers, police said. The sheriff's office sergeant who was on the scene shot the man, officials said.
