A former part-time Orland Hills police officer was sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday for a drunk driving accident that killed another driver in 2010, according to a statement released by the Will County state's attorney.
Robert Caputo, 62, pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI in May for his involvement in the fatal accident, which killed DaVon Pitts, a 20-year-old Homewood resident.
"Robert Caputo's callous decision to drink and then drive claimed the life of a young man," Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow said in the statement. "He can now spend the next six years in state prison contemplating the horrific outcome of his selfish action."
On Sept. 12, 2010, a drunk Caputo was driving his pickup truck on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 near New Lenox when he struck Pitts' Chevrolet Malibu parked on the shoulder.
