Chicago - Terrence Mauldin dies attempting to do a "Triple Lindy" on north side beach

An Austin man died after hitting on his head while trying to do a back flip near the lake shore in the Gold Coast neighborhood, authorities said.

Terrence Mauldin was with his 23-year-old nephew when he attempted a back flip off a three-foot-high retaining wall south of North Avenue Beach around 7:20 p.m., police said. Mauldin landed head-first onto the concrete, according to police. 

Paramedics responded to the 1500 block of North Lake Shore Drive and performed CPR on Mauldin and took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. 

Mauldin, 54, of the 5600 block of West Augusta Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 7:58 p.m. in the hospital emergency room, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. 

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
