The principal of a south suburban private school was arrested on a drunken driving charge early Saturday, prosecutors said today.

Michael T. Zajac, 36, of Itasca, had a blood alcohol level that was twice the legal limit when he was stopped about 1 a.m. Saturday in Harwood Heights, according to court documents.

Cook County Criminal Court Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. Sunday ordered Zajac’s held in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Zajac faces an aggravated DUI felony charge as well as citations regarding no proof of insurance, illegal alcohol transportation, speeding and improper lane usage, according to court documents.

Zajac is the principal of the Joseph Academy in Hometown, an assistant state's attorney said today. The school which opened in 2009 and the school is located on the 9000 block of South Kostner Avenue. It focuses on the needs of children with severe emotional challenges, according to the school’s Web site.

Zajac has two prior DUI convictions, according to court documents.

He received a one-year conditional discharge in Iroquois County in 2000 for a DUI incident, as well as court supervision in a 1997 DuPage County drunk driving case, according to court records.

Zajac also was convicted on a 2003 battery charge in Cook County and received a sentence of 25 days’ public service and 18 months supervision, according to court records.
