CHICAGO BLACK VIOLENCE - 18-year-old dead, 7 others wounded across South, West sides

Saturday 1 June 2013

A man was killed and seven others wounded in South and West side shootings shootings Friday night and Saturday morning, according to authorities.
The one person who did not survive overnight shootings was shot outside a party in the 8400 block of South Constance Avenue in the Stony Island Park neighborhood, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's office identified him as Dionte Maxwell, 18, of the 8400 block of South Marshfield Avenue. He was pronounced dead at Jackson Park Hospital at 11:53 p.m.
Police in rain gear collected shell casings and a bloody piece of cloth from the alley behind the house where the man was shot. The neighborhood surrounding the crime scene is a mix of meticulously maintained brick bungalows and boarded-up vacant buildings.
Earlier Friday, a 16-year-old boy was shot about 4:30 p.m. in the 7200 block of South Central Park Avenue in the West Lawn neighborhood and walked into Holy Cross Hospital. He's in good condition, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss said.
Another man, 19, was shot about 6:30 p.m. in the 7800 block of South Marshfield Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood. He was dropped off at Little Company of Mary Hospital and transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
In what police termed a gang-related incident on the West Side, a 20-year-old man was shot on the street in the 1400 block of West Lawler Avenue by a gunman who came up to him and fired multiple times with a 9-mm handgun, according to News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. The only wound the man suffered was from a shot that went through his right elbow, Mirabelli said; after he was shot, he fled the scene and was picked up about a block away in the 1500 block of Lawler before being transported to Mt. Sinai, where his condition had stabilized.
Mirabelli said that the victim was not cooperative and that he was combative with both hospital personnel and police officers. Mirabelli said that witnesses identified the shooter and police are looking for him.
Someone shot a man in the arm on the West Side, near the intersection of Lemoyne Street and Lawler Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood. The 20-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
