Monday 23 September 2013

A Chicago police sergeant shot and wounded a gunman involved in a shootout in the South Side's Fernwood neighborhood, authorities said.

The sergeant was responding to a domestic disturbance call in the 10000 block of South State Street around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he saw two people shooting toward each other, according to a preliminary statement from the Chicago Police Department.

One of the shooters turned toward the sergeant and the sergeant told the gunman to drop his gun, according to the statement. The gunman didn't and and the sergeant fired, striking him in the foot, police said.

The gunman, whose age was not released, was taken to Roseland Community Hospital and was expected to survive, officials said.
