The Chicago Police Department has expanded the use of foot patrols to 20 of the city's most dangerous areas, part of a strategy initiated earlier this year that officials say has cut crime.
The department in March deployed rookie officers on foot in the first of 20 "impact zones" on the South and West sides, where the city says 20 percent of all violent crime occurred during a recent three-year period. The rookies are now walking all 20 of the zones.
On top of that, overtime has been offered to veteran officers to patrol those zones in cars.
