“The Federal Bureau of Investigation released its 2012 crime statistics from across the country Wednesday and, in no surprise, Chicago’s homicide rate was the worst in the nation.
The FBI reported 500 murders in Chicago last year, more than even New York City, which recorded 419 homicides. Overall, the FBI reported violent crime in the U.S. rose by a modest 0.7 percent in 2012 after years of steady decline. The Bureau also reported that nearly 70 percent of all homicides involved a gun.
Even though Chicago had the highest overall murder rate, the chances of being killed were greater in Flint, Mich. The town had 63 murders last year— one in every 1,613 city residents.”
