What Anchor Babies?
Complaints from the neighbors brought building inspectors and the police to a row of connected town houses in San Gabriel, California – all that noise and all those pregnant women coming and going at all hours of the day and night. When the inspectors entered one kitchen they found a row of bassinets holding several infants who were being attended by a nurse. The cops had uncovered another maternity house that caters to the growing trade in “maternity tourism.”
This maternity house had been in operation for months and the women it serviced were all citizens of China, each of whom had paid tens of thousands of dollars to deliver their babies in the United States, which is one of the few nations to grant citizenship based on geographic location. All of these women were comparatively wealthy; all of them were in America legally on tourist visas.
“These were not women living in squalor – it was a well taken care of place and clean, but there were a lot of women and babies,” recalled Clayton Anderson, the city inspector who shut the place down. “We really couldn’t determine the exact number of people living there.”
Ten of the women and their babies were sent to a nearby motel. By the time the New York Times published the story most of the women had returned to China with their American babies. No doubt some of these “Americans” will be returning in the future seeking American university educations and employment in American industries that are of interest to the leaders of their Chinese homeland. The current policy of birthright citizenship is an ideal conduit for anti-American industrial, governmental and military espionage.
