Isaac Ramirez was elated to be freed from jury duty Monday morning but liberating his cellphone from the clutches of one of the new storage kiosks at the Leighton Criminal Court Building proved to be a much more trying experience.
Ramirez, 35, had taken the bus to the busy courthouse at 26th and California and paid the $3 fee to stash his phone after seeing signs advertising the ban on electronics that went into effect last week. But when he tried to retrieve the phone a few hours later, the machine was jammed, and no one seemed to know what to do.
Soon Ramirez was joined by a handful of others in the lobby, staring at a blinking screen that said, "Please wait ..."
