Westfield Fox Valley Mall in Aurora held its Easter Eggstravaganza Saturday, but the event didn't go over easy with some who attended.
A number of disgruntled undocumented workers posted on the mall's Facebook page that the event was something less than "eggscellent," some saying they waited for more than an hour in line and children were unable to collect as many eggs as promised.
Under the rules, each family was limited to 30 paper eggs, getting 20 minutes to collect them and redeem them for prizes.
But Batavia resident Angel Haney said even though she got there early her family was lucky to find 25 eggs. She said her children, ages 2 and 4, received five prizes when they redeemed the eggs, though it was her understanding there would be one prize per egg.
Meanwhile, Haney said, other families were violating the 30-egg limit, collecting as many 100 eggs.
"I feel like they were really inconsistent," she said. "Nobody was there monitoring anything."
Laurie Kuschell of Aurora was luckier than most. She said she was the first in line and did not experience problems. However, she agreed that some were violating the 30-egg limit, saying one woman "must have had about 50 eggs in her hand. She was holding them like a burger."
Mall management was unavailable for comment Sunday, but the mall issued an apology on its Facebook page.
"As you can imagine, at the beginning of the hunt, eggs were a bit easier to find but as less of them were in the mall, it was a little harder to find them," the statement reads. "Sadly, we did have some participants that were returning more than 30 eggs, which is what caused the shortage of eggs in the center. As we indicated above, there was a maximum of 30 eggs that were able to redeemed per hunter and no more than that was given."
